Program Notes
Movable Borders for String Quintet by Douglas Hedwig
Movable Borders for string quintet was commissioned by the Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra and was premiered in February 2017. The work draws inspiration from the folk and art music of Hungary, Argentina, India, Serbia and the US. The first movement is filled with rhythmic intensity and a contrasting, lyrical middle section. The second movement was composed shorty after the composer returned from a trip to India, and the final movement is based on Serbian dance music.
Fantasy for String Bass and Percussion by John McLean
Fantasy for String Bass and Percussion was completed in 2000. There are pairings of various instrumental combinations so that a variety of color is achieved, without over powering the string bass player. Even though the string bass part seems to be the dominant instrument for the group, real chamber music is the intended result in performance. Nevertheless, this is an opportunity for the bass player to be expressive. There are two speeds for the music, moderate and faster, and the latter should sound more lyrical than the former. The climax of the work occurs when most of the players combine to produce the same effort.

Program Notes for IO/F-2 by Mark Prince Lee
IO/F-2: Music in 5 Groups is an open score composition written for any instrument or instrumental combination. Consisting of 5 sets of fixed pitches divided into 5 Groups, the piece is a systematic exploration of pitch/time relationships. The individual Groups are connected by pitch juxtapositions and real-time correlations. Groups I, and V, which share the same fixed pitch set serve as the principle foundation for the inner movements. Groups II, III, and IV contain their own fixed pitch sets with III comprised of two juxtaposed fixed pitch sets of five and seven.
