Colin Ferguson is a professional cellist in the Austin area who hails from Chicago. Mr. Ferguson holds a B.A. in Cello Performance from Michigan State University, and an M.M. in Cello Performance from the University of Texas at Austin. He has taught at Valparaiso University in Indiana, and will be performing and coaching at Concordia College in Austin. Mr. Ferguson is a member of the Austin Lyric Opera Orchestra, performs regularly with the Austin and San Antonio symphonies, and is a member of the Anderson Piano Quintet. This summer he will be performing and teaching at the Adolfo Salazar Conservatory in Madrid, Spain.

The NSU Contemporary Music Ensemble will present a complete performance of French composer Erik Satie’s rarely heard Vexations in Magale Recital Hall on the campus of Northwestern State University. The performance will begin at 7:30 pm on Friday April 8, and conclude by 5:00 pm on Saturday April 9, 2011.







Erik Satie (1866-1925) is best known for his piano music including the famous Gymnopedies. Despite a lack of formal training Satie anticipated many of the most important trends in contemporary music including minimalism and performance art while influencing composers from Claude Debussy to John Cage.


Composed in 1893 Vexations consists of a chorale melody based on an 11 note tone row followed by two variations which is then repeated 840 times. By performing the work at the suggested tempo a complete performance will last around 20 hours. According to Satie, “it would be advisable to prepare oneself beforehand, and in the deepest silence for serious immobility’s”. The work will be performed by a combination of vibraphone, piano and cello.



The NSU Contemporary Music Ensemble consists of NSU students Brad Smith, Nathan Glassy, J. C. Bryant, Corey Joachim and NSU faculty member Paul Christopher, all of whom are committed to the performance of new music as well as influential masterpieces of the past 150 years. Additionally, art major Jeremy Jones and faculty member Leslie Gruesbeck provided the artwork to enhance the performance.



Admission is free and open to the public. Audience members are invited to enter at any time during the performance or stay for the duration. In addition donations will be accepted to support the work of the Hub Ministry in their effort to help the homeless in the Shreveport/Bossier area. We invite you to generously support the Ministry’s work on behalf of those who are less fortunate while experiencing Satie’s visionary masterpiece.

BIOGRAPHY

Malena McLaren is the Assistant Professor of Clarinet at Northwestern State University of Louisiana.  She received the Bachelor in Music Education and Master of Music degree in Clarinet Performance at The University of New Mexico where she studied with Keith Lemmons. Malena has also studied with James Gillespie at the University of North Texas, where she received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Clarinet Performance.  She has recorded with the University of New Mexico Chamber Orchestra, the University of North Texas Wind Symphony and has performed in orchestras throughout Mexico and the United Kingdom.  In Spring 2006 she performed in Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Victoria, British Columbia as a member Trio de Llano. She has played with the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra and been a member of the University of North Texas Wind Symphony, the North Texas Graduate Woodwind Quintet, as well as various professional orchestras and chamber groups Albuquerque and the Dallas metroplex. Malena is currently a member of Trio de Llano, an artist faculty ensemble-in-residence at Northwestern State University. She also plays frequently with the Rapides Symphony Orchestra.  Malena’s scholarly works include an article in The Clarinet.  Additionally, in July 2007 she received the second place prize in the International Clarinet Association’s Research Presentation Competition at the ClarinetFest® in Vancouver, Canada; a trip in which her travel was funded by an Enrichment Fund Grant provided by Northwestern State University. Most recently, Malena was invited to perform at the 2008 International Clarinet Association’s Annual ClarinetFest® in Kansas City, MO, as a member of Trio de Llano at the 2009 National Flute Association Conference in New York City, and at the upcoming August 2011 ClarinetFest® in Los Angeles, CA.

BIOGRAPHIES 

A native of Honduras, Josue Ramirez began double bass studies at the age of 16 at the Victoriano Lopez Music School. There he received invaluable instrumental instruction from Maestro Ernesto G. Rodriguez. In 2002 Mr. Ramirez traveled to Costa Rica to study with Maestro Carlos Vives from the Costa Rican National Symphony as well as Professor Klaus Stoll from the Berlin Philharmonic. In 2003 Mr. Ramirez was given the opportunity to continue his double bass studies on a full scholarship at the Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge where he graduated in 2006 with a Bachelor's degree in Music under the instruction of Yung-Chiao Wei. The following year Mr. Ramirez continued his studies at Northwestern State University and earned the Master of Music degree in Double Bass. At present, he is a candidate for the doctoral degree in music from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA.  He also serves as Principal Bassist of the South Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and also performs in the Rapides Symphony, Mobile Symphony, Shreveport Symphony, and Texarkana Symphony.

The founding  member of the Jazz group “Hibriduz” (Hybrid), Oscar Rossignoli currently lives in Tegucigalpa, Honduras where he works  as a freelance accompanist and arranger. A native  Honduran, he performs in both classical and jazz idioms.  His piano studies began at the age of  ten  with Sergio Suazo. At  thirteen, he became a student of Amalia Marin, at the Escuela de Musica Victoriano Lopez where he was awarded first prize at the Juan Tutto Diffent young artist concerto competition with Mendelssohn’s Rondo Capriccioso. Mr. Rossignoli was also awarded the second prize at the young artist concerto competition hosted by the Japan Government Embassy in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. His future plans include further studies in the U.S. with an emphasis in jazz
