* The Black Bayou Composition Award was given to Daniel Fawcett for Skulptures I - III, because it reflects the connection between music and the natural world. This award includes a cash prize and a commission for the 2020 New Music on the Bayou festival.
This piece was written for cello, gesture controllers, and electronics. In 2012 it began as a stand-alone piece written for cello and electronics alone exploring micro-scale form. In 2018, it was edited and expanded by adding two additional pieces. Inspired by performance art extended with technology in the manner of Nam June Paik's TV Cello of 1971, gesture controllers and a homemade Arduino audio rig were added. Utilizing these elements led to the inclusion of choreographic notation to facilitate the performer's interpretation. The result of these elements is meant to create a focused event experience for both listener and performer.
